Research Focus
Virus diseases largely reduce crop yield and have always been a major concern in agricultural production because chemical treatments or conventional agronomical methods are not effective to control them. Hence, understanding of how viruses been transmitted to and induced disease in plant are crucial for developing new and effective techniques to prevent viral disease in the plants. Our studies cover a wide range of research topics regarding virus diseases in crops and fruit trees that are economically important in China. In particular, we have been working on insect transmitted viruses such as rice black streaked dwarf virus, maize dwarf mosaic virus, and barley yellow dwarf virus. These viruses have been long known to exist but still pose a serious threat to crop production. In addition, we also devise new molecular diagnostic methods for detection of viruses that infect fruit trees. For molecular studies on viral gene functions, we identify and characterize the viral proteins that have roles in suppression of RNA silencing, viral pathogenicity and virus movement. Recently, a new project work has been started to investigate what effects of virus infection on host in the context of the alteration of synthesis, translocation and function of various cellular components.
